Tottenham Hotspur recovered from conceding an early goal to score five against Sunderland at White Hart Lane. Who earned their Tottenham ‘Spurs’ for their performance?
It turned out all right on the night as Tottenham were just too good for Sunderland who remain at the foot of the Premier League table with a battle on their hands to avoid relegation. Having gifted the visitors the first half lead with another comedy of errors, this time through Vlad Chiriches’ mistake, Spurs set about rectifying the situation and were level after 27 minutes through Emmanuel Adebayor who met Christian Eriksen’s cross, the ball going in off his body.
Eriksen was the inspiration behind Tottenham’s win, creating the second goal after the interval for Harry Kane, scoring on his first Premier League start for Spurs. Kane worked hard and caused defenders problems with his strength and willingness to run at them with the ball. He got into a number of positions to score last night but didn’t get the power into his shot to finish them off. Eriksen then became scorer with the third, assisted by Nacer Chadli.
From an Eriksen corner in added time, the ball eventually fell to Gylfi Sigurdsson to make it five. It was the Icelander’s second added time goal as a substitute in consecutive home wins.
Kane had a deserved ‘assist’ for the 4th when he worked himself into position and when his shot squirmed under the goalkeeper, it left Adebayor the simple task of touching the ball into the net. The Togolese striker could have had a third, or an ‘assist’, but his shot across goal was saved with Kane waiting for a pass in the centre.
A better night for Spurs than many feared, the players blocked the news of Tim Sherwood’s departure in the summer from their minds and produced their best home win for some considerable time. Going forward Spurs troubled Sunderland constantly especially after going ahead but defensively there’s still uncertainty in the Spurs back-line.
Tim Sherwood referred to these final games as ’6 Cup Finals’. That’s one won, five to go.
