Spurs’ last win on this day, was at home to Southampton in 1991 with Gary Lineker scoring both in front of a crowd of 24,291. His two goals came in three minutes in the first half. After 38 minutes the ball was played into space behind the Southampton defence, Lineker picked it up and took it on into the penalty area to shoot past Tim Flowers.
Three minutes later, Pat van den Hauwe’s pass on the right was flicked on to Lineker who was tight to the right touch line. He headed in on goal and as the goalkeeper came out Lineker lifted the ball over him and into the net.
In the Southampton team was Neil Ruddock who had left Spurs for Millwall three years earlier but would return to White Hart Lane in the summer of 1992.
The main concern at this games was whether Paul Gascoigne would be fit enough to play in the FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal at Wembley in just over a week’s time. Gascoigne had undergone surgery immediately after the 6th Round game against Portsmouth. It was a vital race against time but he played in a mid-week match at Norwich and we all know the rest!
