If Younes Kaboul were to move from Tottenham Hotspur to Arsenal in the summer, would it be as controversial as Sol Campbell’s transfer in 2001?
There was a report in yesterday’s Daily Star suggesting that Younes Kaboul whose contract at Tottenham is up in the summer, would consider a move to their north London rivals, Arsenal.A similar move by Sol Campbell in 2001 caused uproar and great annoyance and anger among Tottenham fans that their captain had made the move to Highbury. Campbell who came through the Tottenham youth system has never been forgiven and is routinely referred to as ‘Judas’ and when he returned to White Hart Lane with Arsenal and then Portsmouth he could always be assured of a very hostile reception.
Now, 13 years on, a Tottenham player who has been the acting captain in the absence of Michael Dawson, is talking of making a similar move. In the article it says that Kaboul has told friends that he would be keen on a move to the Emirates where he would meet up with his best friend Abou Diaby. It is expected that Arsenal will lose their central defender, Thomas Vermaelen in the summer and Kaboul could be an ideal replacement in that position.Younes Kaboul
Kaboul has missed much of the past two seasons with injury, starting only 13 games this season as he has tried to return to full fitness. His recovery from the injury which caused him to miss all but the opening game of last season, took longer than expected and it is only in the last few weeks that he has returned to the first team when Spurs’ resources in central defence were greatly stretched.
Kaboul is a big favourite with fans for his total commitment and endeavour and he famously scored the winning goal to give Spurs their first success at the Emirates. There are concerns, however, over his reliability due to his injury problems. His performances have been disappointing in his most recent games – being sent off at Chelsea having conceded a penalty and then giving away an early own goal at Liverpool. We have not seen the best of Kaboul over the past two seasons when many fans had expected him to form a formidable central defensive partnership with Jan Vertonghen. Unfortunately, it just hasn’t happened.
Reaction To Arsenal Move?
If he were to sign for Arsenal would it create the same reaction as Sol Campbell’s transfer?
It wouldn’t be well received by Spurs supporters but I don’t think it would generate the same anger amongst most fans – Kaboul is not the commanding central defender we had hoped he would become and with his injury problems, it’s uncertain that he will achieve that level. At present, in the current set-up at Tottenham, Kaboul is one of a number of players about whom there is uncertainty over their future at White Hart Lane.
Younes Kaboul has tweeted that there is no truth in the rumour of a move to Arsenal.
I can confirm 100% that the rumour about me joining Arsenal is not true!!! #coys
