At last, a game where we can genuinely ask who earned their ‘Spurs’ for Tottenham in the draw against Benfica in Lisbon. It was a performance for their travelling support who could be heard throughout the game.
Tottenham’s under-strength team can look back with pride at their efforts in the Europa League match in Lisbon. As a team they worked hard and held it together even after Benfica had gone ahead in the first half. Spurs’ late rally, almost brought about the unthinkable when their two goals in a minute from Nacer Chadli set them up to bring the tie level on aggregate.Spurs almost managed it and through the final minutes Benfica were worried as Spurs created the chances which could have taken the game to extra time. The officials bottled the penalty appeal as Kane forced his way into the area but then with the final kick of the tie, Benfica equalised from the penalty spot.
Sandro and Zeki Fryers played well as a makeshift central defensive partnership. They played in a very controlled manner and were rarely troubled, keeping the Benfica strikers quiet.
Kyle Naughton impressed at right back and showed his value with some telling forward passes as Spurs to threaten the Benfica back line. Nabil Bentaleb worked hard all across midfield. He was always in a position looking to take a pass and encouraged those around him.
Harry Kane made a telling contribution in his cameo appearance in those final 15 minutes. He works hard across the pitch and is hard to knock off the ball when going forward.
