The third eye-catching game played on this day was an FA Cup 4th Round tie against Charlton at the Valley. On this occasion, unlike in 1983, when Spurs were shocked by Derby’s recovery in an FA Cup replay, it was Tottenham who caused the drama with a second half fightback from a seemingly hopeless position.
It is memorable FA Cup game from a period when Spurs’ Cup success has been minimal. Spurs were drawn away to fellow Premiership side Charlton who had won the earlier league game by a solitary goal and had earned a scoreless draw at Tottenham a few days earlier.
George Graham’s Spurs side found themselves two goals behind early in the second half. Powell put the home side ahead in the 11th minute and they doubled their advantage early in the second half, Svensson scoring three minutes after the re-start.
Spurs staged a remarkable comeback to score three goals inside six minutes to turn the game around. Gary Doherty who was playing as a striker started the recovery in the 58th minute, creating the goal which was put into his own net by a Charlton defender. In the 62nd minute Darren Anderton scored the equaliser and a minute later Oyvind Leonhardsen put them in front. A late strike from Sergei Rebrov sealed the victory with Spurs facing a home match against Stockport County in the 5th Round.
