Christian Eriksen has benefited from from playing regularly in Tim Sherwood’s team and earned his Tottenham ‘Spurs’ for the month of January. The HotspurHQ ‘Spurs’ awards take in the 5 matches played in January – 4 in the Premier League plus the FA Cup game. After each match the readers of our blog voted for the player who has been deserving of his ‘Spurs’. Nine players have been placed in the top three on at least one occasion – the player with the highest % votes cast in each match receives 3 points, second gets two and 3rd claims 1 point.
Christian Eriksen: 1st
Eriksen showed a consistency of performance through January, finishing in the top 3 in four of the five games during the month. He was first in the away win at Swansea with 43% of the votes. That was a particularly close poll with two-goal Emmanuel Adebayor on 42%. Eriksen was second in the game against Crystal Palace where the runaway winner was Nabil Bentaleb in his first Premier League start. Eriksen was third in the two games at the beginning of the month against Manchester United when he scored the winning goal and at Arsenal.
Hugo Lloris: 2nd
Lloris won his ‘Spurs’ in December and was selected as the top performer in the FA Cup defeat at Arsenal along with Michael Dawson who both had 22% of the votes. He also finished top in the defeat against Manchester City. Although, conceding five goals to City, he was the clear winner with 49% of the votes cast and was not deemed responsible for the heavy loss. He made a world-class in the first half to keep Spurs in the game. The French international was unfortunate that in the second half as Spurs fought with 10-men, he was beaten by a well-taken penalty, a goal that came back off the post to the goalscorer, a deflected shot and a ball that was deflected and fell invitingly for the goalscorer.
Vlad Chiriches, Emmanuel Adebayor, Michael Dawson: = 3rd
Chiriches finished second in the poll for the game at Old Trafford and was 3rd in the games against Swansea and Palace along with Dawson who had topped the poll in the Cup game. Emmanuel Adebayor, as well as his second place against Swansea was third in the win over United and the defeat against City.Topping The Poll
Aaron Lennon topped the poll in the win at Old Trafford with his lively performance which posed a constant threat to the United defenders who found him too difficult to handle. That poll was particularly close with four players within 4% of each other. Lennon was first with 24%, Chiriches was second on 22% with Eriksen third on 21% and Adebayor a further per cent behind.
Kyle Walker was second in the Cup match at the Emirates and Etienne Capoue who came on as a half-time substitute against City and scored Spurs only goal finished second in that poll. Readers recognised his contribution as Spurs battled against the odds after Danny Rose had been sent off.
Three of the 5 polls for January were very close with only a small number of votes separating each player. Thank you to everyone who took part during the month and I hope you will continue to give your views in future polls.
