A Selection Conundrum For Tim Sherwood At Tottenham (3) Sandro/Paulinho
The third Tottenham selection dilemma for Tim Sherwood considers the position in central midfield. He is currently playing Mousa Dembele and Nabil Bentaleb but when Sandro and Paulinho return from injury who will be his first choice partnership?
Tottenham’s Brazilian midfield pairing of Sandro and Paulinho have been regulars through the opening months of the season. Injury, however, has kept both of them out of the team over the past number of weeks.
Sandro has yet to play under Tim Sherwood while Paulinho returned from suspension for the game against Stoke. He impressed in his time on the pitch until Charlie Adam’s heavy challenge put him out of the game and the team until at least the end of January.
Sherwood was impressed by Paulinho during the first half against Stoke, saying in his post-match comments,
Paulinho was immense in the centre of the pitch with Mousa Dembele.
In the meantime the manager has put his faith in youth and given Nabil Bentaleb an opportunity in the team. The young, Under-19 French international has grabbed the chance with both hands, impressing in his early appearances as a substitute and then against Palace when Sherwood gave him his first Premier League start. When the Brazilian internationals return to fitness, who will be omitted from the team? Andre Villas-Boas regularly had three central midfield players in the team – Sandro, Paulinho and Mousa Dembele. Now that Shewood has reverted to a 4-4-2 formation, 3 plus Bentaleb into 2 doesn’t go.
There are already a number of central midfield players who have been sidelined since the appointment of Sherwood – Etienne Capoue, Lewis Holtby and Gylfi Sigurdsson have all had their opportunities in the team greatly restricted in the past few weeks. The most recent media reports suggest that Holtby and Capoue could be on their way out of White Hart Lane. Holtby as reported in the Guardian could return to Germany where his former club Schalke are interested while Napoli according to the Independent are reported to be considering an approach for Capoue.
