There has been much speculation about Erik Lamela’s future at Tottenham. Conflicting remarks have been made by his family and there have been media reports of clubs in Italy showing an interest in signing the young Argentine international but Tim Sherwood has given his views and it would appear that Lamela will be remaining at White Hart Lane.
Erik Lamela is 21 years of age and moving to England was a big step for him. He was a big favourite with fans at Roma and he was very reluctant to leave Italy. It has, understandably, taken time for him to settle in England and become accustomed to the pressure and rigours of football in the Premier League. He has been given little opportunity to play in the league, being restricted to the less demanding games in the Europa League and so it is taking longer for him to adapt his game to English football with the added complication of the recent change of manager at Spurs.
A Reminder of Erik Lamela’s Amazing Talent: Watch hereWith the January transfer window open, there arose speculation that Spurs could be willing to allow Lamela to return to Italy on loan with a number of clubs, including Juventus and Inter Milan, reported to be showing an interest.
It would be a very strange decision if Spurs were to discard their record signing so quickly and there would appear to be little to be gained by Lamela returning to Italy – how would that assist Lamela acclimatise tothe demands of football in England?
Tim Sherwood has spoken out to dismiss the rumours that Lamela could be leaving White Hart Lane. Speaking yesterday, the manager said, when asked if the player had a future at Spurs,
Absolutely, he won’t be leaving on loan in this transfer window.
Tim Sherwood’s comments were reported by Sky Sports and he said,
We know what a talented player Erik is and we also understand how players need time to settle. He’s needing that time to acclimatise to a new country. He doesn’t speak English and with the tempo of the games, especially over the Christmas period when they come thick and fast, he hasn’t been 100 per cent fit.
Sherwood said that Lamela hasn’t fully recovered from a thigh injury and that the club is working with him cautiously to ensure that he returns to full fitness so that when he plays in the team he is ready and fully fit in order to show what he is really capable of.
Lamela is probably unlikely to be included in the squad for today’s game against Crystal Palace but he played for just under an hour and scored in a friendly against Charlton at the training ground on Tuesday.
