Birmingham City 3 Tottenham Hotspur 3 (FA Cup 3rd Round)
Scorers: Harris (2), Leek Greaves (2), Jones
Team: Brown, Baker, Henry, Blanchflower, Norman, Mackay, Medwin, White, Allen, Greaves, Jones
This was a difficult tie for Tottenham, the FA Cup holders, against 1st Division opposition, on a pitch that had been covered in snow for much of the previous week.
The ‘Double’ winning team of the previous season had been strengthened by the signing of Jimmy Greaves and the other changes saw Cliff Jones replacing Terry Dyson on the left with Terry Medwin coming in to play on the right. Les Allen was at centre forward with Bobby Smith losing his place for Greaves.
Spurs took a three goal lead by the 32nd minute. They went ahead after 8 minutes through Greaves whose first shot was saved but he made no mistake with the second effort. Jones added the second after 30 minutes from a cross by Medwin. Two minutes later Spurs looked to be in total control when Greaves headed the third from an Allen cross. Birmingham, however, fought their way back into the game by scoring a minute later through Harris, following a free-kick. In the second half centre-forward, Harris, scored his second after five minutes and in the 55th minute Leek scored the equaliser following another free-kick. Both teams had goals disallowed for off-side late in the game
Spurs won the replay 4 – 2, with goals from Medwin (2), Greaves and Allen.
Tottenham’s First Ever Goal
6th January, 1883
The first ever Spurs goal was scored today in Hotspur FC’s second match. Unfortunately, the name of the goal scorer is not recorded and further it was in a 1-8 defeat in a friendly against Latymer who were to become the club’s main rivals over the next number of years.
