Tottenham On This Day
This evening’s game against Manchester United at Old Trafford revives memories of a previous match against United on New Year’s Day.
1st January, 1996
Tottenham Hotspur 4 Manchester United 1 (1st Division)
Scorers: Sheringham, Campbell, Armstrong (2)
Team: Walker, Austin, Edinburgh, Nethercott, Calderwood, Campbell, Caskey, Dumitrescu (McMahon), Armstrong, Sheringham, Rosenthal
What a way to start a new year – live on television and convincingly defeating the eventual Champions.
This was probably one of the best results during Gerry Francis’ managerial reign. Teddy Sheringham scored the first and although United equalised, Sol Campbell scored before half-time and then two goals from Chris Armstrong sealed Spurs’ victory. Both teams had injury problems but Spurs overcame them much better although United’s keeper Peter Schmeichel was injured in the warm up and had to be taken off at half-time.
The win kept Spurs in 4th place, three points behind United with Newcastle a further 7 points clear. Spurs were level on points with Liverpool and followed this with a home win over Manchester City later in the month to move into 3rd but after that the season tailed off with Tottenham eventually finishing 8th.
That win against United was as good as it got under Francis as the team struggled through the following season and into the next at which point he left White Hart Lane.
