Tottenham’s Premier League season has been more difficult than it might have been due to a lack of goals from their strikers. Jermain Defoe has been the ‘man in possession’ for the last two games but Roberto Soldado scored a hat-trick against Anzhi in the Europa League to remind Andre Villas-Boas of his capabilities. Who will be selected against Liverpool?Andre Villas-Boas has a major decision to make ahead of Tottenham’s vital match against Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Which of his two strikers should start the game?
After months of waiting for an opportunity Defoe has replaced Soldado for the last two away games at Fulham and Sunderland. Spurs won both matches but the England striker failed to get on the scoresheet. He worked hard and tested the goalkeeper and had two efforts against Sunderland which hit the post but he continues his run of only one League goal in 2013. Having scored 9 goals this season in the European and Cup matches he deserved a chance in the team after AVB had persisted with Soldado through the opening months of the season as his first choice for the lone striker’s role.
Roberto SoldadoSoldado was signed from Valencia in the summer for £26m as the answer to Tottenham’s striker problems. He has an impressive record in Spain but has struggled, like Defoe, through a lack of service. He has also scored 9 goals in total, 5 in Europe and 4 in the league, of which 3 are from the penalty spot. His hat-trick against Anzhi will have boosted his confidence but has he done enough to return to the Spurs’ starting line-up?
AVB Has Previous
Villas-Boas gave no indication following the game as to whether Soldado would be selected for Sunday’s game. He was quoted on @SpursRelated saying,
It’s a bit premature to decide team for Liverpool game. We always wanted to give this game to Roberto, was always plan. Now it’s about putting the best possible strategy of the game and seeing what we can do.
The manager has previous for not starting with a player who has scored a hat-trick in his previous game. Last season, Defoe who was the club’s leading scorer, netted a hat-trick in the home win over Maribor. For the following weekend’s game at Manchester City, AVB decided to give Emmanuel Adebayor his first league start of the season against his former club.
Who will he pick this time? He might surprise us all, including Liverpool, and start with both strikers.
