Who Earned Their Tottenham ‘Spurs’ Against Anzhi?

Tottenham maintained their 100 percent record in this  season’s Europa League as they defeated Anzhi 4 – 1. Roberto Soldado with his first hat-trick for Spurs set them on the road to victory with his opening two goals coming inside 15 minutes. his return to goalscoring form will be a boost to his confidence and he benefited from the wing play of Andros Townsend on the left delivering crosses into the penalty area.

Townsend who started is first game for Spurs for some time had a lively performance taking on the visitors with his pace and strong running. He should have had a goal when played in on goal by Gylfi Sigurdsson late in the first half but lifted the ball wide as the goalkeeper came out to challenge.

Lewis Holtby scored the other goal which he took very well with great control and finish. It came after good link up play between Mousa Dembele, Holtby, Sigurdsson and Townsned who delivered a chipped pass into the area for Holtby to finish. The German controlled the ball in the air with one touch to then strike it beyond the goalkeeper.

There were positive displays from two of the Tottenham younger players – Zeki Fryers played in central defence and Ryan Fredericks came on at half-time for Danny Rose. He was very lively and showed tenacity in defence and great pace when going forward and put in a cross which Soldado flicked on but the goalkeeper saved. He then won the penalty from which the Spaniard completed his hat-trick. Shaq Coulthirst made a late appearance for Soldado.

It was good to see the return of Rose and Eriksen after injury.

A satisfactory performance in which the team played at a better tempo in a game which had no significance for either side as both were already assured of qualification to the next stage of the competition.
