Tottenham 5 Dynamo Tbilisi 1 UEFA Cup 3rd Round (2nd Leg)
Scorers: McGrath, Chivers (2), Peters (2)
After a 1 – 1 draw in Tbilisi a fortnight earlier when Ralph Coates scored the goal, Spurs qualified for the next round with a comprehensive win at White Hart Lane. The opening goal after 30 minutes was scored by Chris McGrath who had only made his debut in October in a win over Arsenal and was keeping Alan Gilzean out of the team.
McGrath, from Belfast, had worked his way through the Spurs youth system and had a very promising first season as Tottenham progressed to the UEFA Cup Final. In following seasons, however, he failed to make such an impact and although he made over 60 appearances for Spurs and went on to win caps for Northern Ireland, he failed to live up to that early promise. He was eventually transferred to Manchester United in October, 1976.
One up at the interval, Spurs soon added a second through Martin Chivers from a Coates cross. Tbilisi replied immediately but Spurs emphasised their superiority on the night with further goals from Martin Paters, a second from Chivers and a finally another from Peters. Tbilisi were unable to deal with the Tottenham crosses as all five goals were the result of crosses from Coates, Peters and John Pratt.
