Tottenham Hotspur 3 Liverpool 1 League Cup 5th Round Replay
Scorers: Peters, Chivers (2)
Team: Jennings; Evans, Knowles; Pratt, England, Naylor; Gilzean (Neighbour), Perryman, Chivers, Peters, Pearce
Spurs had progressed to the League 5th Round with a win over Huddersfield Town in the 2nd Round at White Hart Lane. I took three matches to decide the next tie against Middlebrough. A 1 – 1 draw at Middlesbrough was followed by a scoreless draw at home in the replay. The second replay was decided in Spurs favour, 2 – 1 after extra time. Two days later they defeated Millwall by two goals in the 4th Round.
Spurs had the better of the first half of the game at Anfield and Martin Peters’ goal had earned Spurs a draw at Anfield two days earlier. He had ghosted in unnoticed at a corner after Mike England had challenged for the cross. Peters hammered the loose ball past Ray Clemence in the 54th minute. Liverpool drew level with 12 minutes to play.Replay
Fixture congestion again required Spurs to play a Cup tie within 48 hours of the previous game. Spurs were expecting a difficult game in the replay against the League leaders but surprised Liverpool with their stunning start to the game. Bill Nicholson’s team displayed their full array of talent as they overwhelmed Liverpool by scoring three goals in the first fifteen minutes. Although Liverpool pulled one goal back, Spurs were never troubled and the goals from John Pratt and Martin Chivers (2) ensured victory and another semi-final against Wolves.
