Tottenham travel across London for their second away derby of the season. After their improved performance in the home draw against Manchester United on Sunday, Spurs will be homing to add to Fulham’s miserable start to the season. The home players, however, will have the added incentive of trying to impress their newly appointed manager, Rene Meulensteen.

Fulham suffered a three goal defeat at Craven Cottage inflicted by Spurs in last season’s game which was also played at the beginning of December. The goals came in the second half with Sandro scoring the first after 56 minutes. Jermain Defoe added two more in a lacklustre match which brought Spurs injury concerns as Michael Dawson and Gareth Bale had to be substituted early. It was Spurs’ third win in seven days and their third successive league win at Craven Cottage as they moved into 4th place.

Spurs are undefeated in their last four League games at Craven Cottage. They played out a scoreless draw on Boxing Day 2009. The following season, in October 2010, they won 2 – 1 with goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Tom Huddlestone. The next season they won 3 – 1 with Aaron Lennon, Defoe and an own goal securing victory in November, 2011.
With only 10 points from 13 games this season, Fulam are 18th and sacked Martin Jol last Sunday. Their home record shows they have won only once at home this season in the Premier League, against Stoke City (1 – 0) at the beginning of October. They drew with West Brom but have lost to Arsenal, Cardiff, Manchester United and Swansea. Fulham have won only 4 of their last 21 Premier League games and in the last 5 matches have had just 10 shots on target, scoring 2 goals while conceding 14.
Fulham have scored 6 goals at home but have conceded 11. Their leading goalscorers in all competitions are Darren Bent and Hugo Rodallega with 3 each. Dimitar Berbatov has scored twice this season. Scott Parker scored his first goal in the last home game, a defeat to Swansea.
Berbatov missed Saturday’s defeat through illness but could return along with Brede Hangeland.
Spurs haven’t won in the league since their home match with Hull at the end of October. This came thanks to a fortunate penalty award. They showed greater desire against United but conceded two poor goals having taken the lead. Spurs must build on that improvement and become more clinical in front of goal while cutting out the errors in defence.
There are no new injuries with Emmanuel Adebayor still doubtful along with Danny Rose, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane.
This is a must win game for Tottenham. After the poor recent results they can not afford any more mistakes or the gap to the top clubs will become too great to overcome. They will have to be prepared to face a Fulham side who will have been given a lift by the appointment of the new manager. Craven Cottage on a December evening will be another new experience for Spurs’ new signings and they will have to adapt to it quickly to ensure they match Fulham’s competitiveness.
