Tottenham Hotspur 2 Arsenal 1 (Premier League)
Scorers: Sheringham, Armstrong Bergkamp
The departure of Jurgen Klinsmann, Gheorge Popescu and Nicky Barmby during the summer had made life more difficult for Spurs. They had only won two League games at White Hart Lane although they were unbeaten away from home. Two of their most recent signings, Ruel Fox and Chris Armstrong were to play a major role in the defeat of Arsenal.
Spurs’ previous game had seen them win at Coventry when Fox who had only signed at the end of September scored his first goal in a 3 – 2 win. Against Arsenal they found themselves a goal down following the visitor’s early domination. Bergkamp put Arsenal ahead after 8 minutes but Spurs showed determination and refused to be beaten. They made a fighting comeback led by Ruel Fox. His runs from the Spurs’ half put the Arsenal defence under constant pressure and he set up the equaliser for Teddy Sheringham after half an hour. From his cross, Sheringham headed home.Spurs continued in a similar vein and after 55 minutes Sheringham fed Chris Armstrong who got between two defenders to score the winner.
The Sunday Times headline read:
Arsenal Fall to Frantic Fox Hunt
A year on from his appointment as the Tottenham manager in place of Ossie Ardiles who had been sacked, Gerry Francis described Spurs’ second half performance -
…..as good as anything since I began managing the club.
The following is from the match report in The Sunday Times.
‘The pace was incredible, some of the moves quite frenetic and many of the skills did well to survive……..In truth, a draw would have been a fair result but Spurs don’t respond to other people’s scripts anymore.’
