Last Season:

Gareth Bale scored both Tottenham goals in a 2 – 1 win. He put them ahead an early lead but Newcastle replied before half-time. The winning goal came in the 78th minute but Newcastle made it a close finish with Hugo Lloris and Michael Dawson called upon to make crucial interventions as Spurs held on to take the three points.

Spurs have last on the last four occasions that Newcastle have played at White Hart Lane but the games have all been close. This season Newcastle have taken 6 points from their away games. They won at Aston Villa at the beginning of September and at Cardiff the following month – both by a 2 – 1 score. Their last away match was at Sunderland where they lost 2 – 1 with a poor performance but last weekend they recovered to defeat Chelsea 2 – 0 at St. James’ Park. Their other away results saw them lose 3 – 2 at Everton and suffer a heavy 4 – 0 defeat at Manchester City in their first game of the season.

Newcastle hope to have their captain Fabricio Coloccini in the team after missing the last four games with a groin injury. Cheick Tiote is also expected to be fit, but Steven Taylor is out.

Spurs can’t afford to have any hangover from Thursday’s Europa League win. This season in the five games following the European matches they have won 3 and lost 2. They will be without Danny Rose and Sandro so the team will remain as has been Andre Villas-Boas favoured choice this season. the only question on supporters’ minds will be whether Erik Lamela’s performance was enough to give him a starting place in the team or a more prominent position among the substitutes with the opportunity of an earlier introduction into the team should Newcastle prove to be difficult to break down.
