Another win for Tottenham in the Europa League but the 2 – 0 success over FC Sheriff in Moldova was not as comfortable as would have been expected or as the scoreline suggests. FC Sheriff were a constant threat on the counter-attack using pace to get behind the Spurs defence and it was only the inability of their forwards to stay onside which saved Spurs on numerous occasions.
FC Sheriff worked hard to make it difficult for Spurs but in the end they managed to get the win with a goal in each half, both of which took a deflection off Sheriff defenders. Jan Vertonghen scored the first with a header and Jermain Defoe added the second after half-time with a shot from 25 yards.
Who Earned Their Tottenham ‘Spurs’?
Hugo Lloris played with confidence throughout – coming to claim the ball or to punch clear and was ever alert when danger threatened from a through ball.
Vlad Chiriches showed confidence and made one exceptional and vital goal-saving clearance as Sheriff almost equalised three minutes after Vertonghen’s opening goal. It was from his cheeky overhead flick that he gained the opportunity to set Spurs on their way to the corner from which they scored.
Jan Vertonghen, captain on the night – he scored the first and was composed in defence.
Sandro worked tirelessly to thwart the FC Sheriff attacks and deny them in midfield.
Aaron Lennon was lively in his first start after injury. As the match progressed he became more influential and had a clear chance on goal in the first half and his shot struck the post after the interval.
Jermain Defoe scored his 22nd goal in Europe for Spurs and his 8th goal of the season.
