Tottenham scored nine goals against Bristol Rovers at White Hart Lane on 22nd October, 1977. It was a 2nd Division match and Spurs were determined to return to the 1st Division at the first attempt following their relegation the previous season.
The team under Keith Burkinshaw, in only his second season in management, had started the season well and Rovers were unfortunate to meet a Spurs team at their very best. Colin Lee had just signed from Torquay United during the week and with injury problems among his strikers, Burkinshaw had to put him straight into the side. What a memorable debut for the young striker, the highlight of his Spurs’ career – 4 goals as Spurs scored nine.
With Lee scoring four it is often forgotten that Ian Moores scored a hat-trick that day, the high point of his time at White Hart Lane.
The team showed only a few changes from the one which had struggled the previous year in the 1st Division – Steve Perryman, Glenn Hoddle, John Pratt, Peter Taylor and Terry Naylor were still regulars in the team. Barry Daines had replaced Pat Jennings who had moved to Arsenal, Burkinshaw having decided that his best days were past him. Neil McNab was in midfield with Hoddle.
