There was disappointment for Christian Eriksen as Denmark missed out on qualification for the World Cup play-offs. Denmark, as expected, recorded a comfortable 6 – 0 win over Malta to finish second in their group behind Italy. However, their record in the group with 16 points saw them rated as ninth of the second-placed teams, missing out on having a final shot at reaching Brazil. They had the worst record in games against the teams finishing first, third, fourth and fifth in their group.
There was better news for the other Tottenham players involved in last night’s World Cup qualifying games.
Andros Townsend helped England to a 2 – 0 win over Poland at Wembley with another exciting performance. Kyle Walker was suspended and Jermain Defoe was an unused substitute.
Romania won 2 – 0 at home to Estonia to secure second place ahead of Hungary with Turkey missing out following defeat to the Netherlands. Vlad Chiriches will be hoping that he will be able to lead his country into the Finals with a victory in the two-legged play-offs.
Iceland took an early lead in Norway but even though the home team drew level it was enough to take Gylfi Sigurdsson’s team into the play-offs. Their nearest rivals, Slovenia, lost in Switzerland against the winners of the group.
Spain won their final match to secure their place in Brazil. France defeated Finland to finish second with Hugo Lloris having another clean sheet.
Next month the players whose teams are in the play-offs will face two crucial matches in less than a week to determine the four teams who will take up the final European places at the World Cup in the summer.
