They’ve Met Before:

Dinamo Tbilisi have played at White Hart lane on two previous occasions and both times they’ve conceded five goals. Having conceded 5 goals a week ago in Tbilisi, the omens are not good for the League and Cup winners from Georgia.

Tottenham were comfortable 5 – 0 winners against Tbiisi last week in Georgia. Two first half goals from Andros Townsend and Paulinho were followed by two from Roberto Soldado and another cracking shot from Danny Rose after the interval. Townsend scored and had two assists while Nacer Chadli who came on as a second half substitute also created two.

The only previous competitive match between the two clubs in London was in the UEFA Cup in 1973-74 when Spurs won 5 – 1 in the 2nd leg to progress to the next round on a 6 – 2 aggregate. The goals that evening were scored by Chris McGrath with Martin Chivers and Martin Peters both scoring twice.

In November, 1960 Dinamo Tbilisi were on a three match tour with the game at White Hart Lane being the final game. They had conceded five goals in the first two matches and maintained that record as Spurs ran out 5 – 2 winners. Terry Medwin who was deputising for the injured Cliff Jones scored twice as did Dave Mackay. Terry Dyson scored the other goal while Tbilisi had equalised in the first half and scored a second late in the game.

That night there was a clash of colours so Spurs played in their dark blue away strip.

Dinamo Tbilisi

Last season was the first time in 5 seasons that Tbilisi had won the League title in Georgia and their former Spanish Under-21 international Xisco who had to go off last week with an injury was the leading goal scorer with 24 goals. Now aged 32 years, he joined Tbilisi in 2011 from Levante and has scored 39 goals in that time in Georgia.

Andre Villas-Boas has to decide on how strong a team to field tonight knowing that Spurs have the first north London derby of the season at the Emirates on Sunday. He wants the team to win but doesn’t want any of his players to sustain an injury or leave them under-prepared for the next match. Arsenal have the advantage of an extra two days for recovery and preparation with their Champions League match having been on Tuesday evening.
