Tottenham’s deal with the Russian club for the transfer of Willianhad been widely reported in the media with only the work permit required ahead of the anticipated signing. The late approach of Chelsea to scupper the deal and their subsequent announcement confirming him as a Chelsea player is a stark reminder to Tottenham that anything can happen during the final days of transfer negotiations. Joining a club which only signed you to prevent one of their rivals buying you, isn’t the best of reasons for moving to west London, apart from the hefty salary. I’m sure Willian if he makes an appearance for Chelsea the end of September will receive a ‘warm’ reception from the White Hart Lane crowd, along with “The Mocking One’ Mourinho, John Terry, Ashely Cole and Frank Lampard.
The delay in signing Willian cost Tottenham dearly and allowed Chelsea to hijack the transfer for the Brazilian who has now been confirmed as a player at Stamford Bridge, subject to a work permit. Spurs have two other signings in the pipeline but are delayed for different reasons and Tottenham will be waiting anxiously for their completion as the transfer window draws to a close next Monday.
Hold-ups in Transfers
Tottenham’s negotiations to sign Erik Lamela from Roma and Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest have been well publicised over the past weeks and according to reports are awaiting completion in the coming days.
- Agreement on the signing of the young Argentine striker, Lamela, for £26m is reported to have been reached and will be completed once Roma have signed a replacement. Understandable from Roma’s point of view but worrying times for Tottenham in case another club steps in to hijack the deal. Lamela who was an unused sub yesterday for Roma is expected to travel to London this week.
- The transfer of the Romanian central defender, Chiriches, is expected to be completed on Wednesday following Steaua Bucharest’s Champions League match against Legia Warsaw. The tie is poised at 1 – 1. The deal had been agreed previously for completion after Bucharest’s match in the previous round against Dinamo Tbilisi. After reaching the Play-off Round, the deal was pulled by the club owner, who is currently in prison. What happens if Steaua Bucharest qualify or the group stages of the Champions League – will he be expected to remain with the club to help them in the next stage of the competition? While if he plays on Tuesday evening there is always the risk of injury. Worrying times for Daniel Levy, Franco Baldini and Andre Villas-Boas.
When asked about the possible signing of Chiriches in yesterday’s post-match interview with BBC Sport, AVB jokingly replied,
Maybe someone will steal him as well. But there is interest in [Chiriches]
As always the final days of the transfer window are a nervy time for all players and managers. Tottenham will be especially anxious in the coming week having experienced a set-back last week when a transfer which seemed to have been a done deal failed to reach completion. The one transfer which they are quite happy to delay is the move of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, if it can be delayed by a year, then Tottenham’s prospects for the season would rise even higher. Unfortunately, all reports indicate it coming to a conclusion this week Madrid once again having got their own way by fair means or foul.
