It’s not as exciting or have the high profile of being in the Champions League but it’s another European adventure for a club which has won this competition twice when it was known as the UEFA Cup. The Europa League draw was made in Nyon today and has drawn Tottenham against Dinamo Tblisi of Georgia with Spurs to be away in the 1st game.
The Europa League Play-off Round is made up of 62 teams of which Tottenham are the No. 1 seeds. Spurs are one of the 18 teams who enter in this Round, joining 29 winners from the 3rd Qualifying Round and 15 losers from the Champions League. The 31 seeded teams meet one of the non-seeded clubs over two legs on Thursday, 22nd and 29th August.
Tottenham were in Group 6 with their possible opponents being the unseeded teams: JK Nõmme Kalju (Estonia), FC Thun (Switzerland), FC Pasching (Austria), FC Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia), FC Astra (Romania) or FC Slovan Liberec (Czech Republic).
Of those teams, Spurs are against the only team that they have played previously in European competition. They met Dinamo Tbilisi in the UEFA Cup in 1973-74, drawing 1 – 1 in the 1st leg and recording an emphatic 5 – 1 win at White Hart Lane a fortnight later. Ralph Coates scored in the away leg with the goals in the home match being scored by Chris McGrath, Martin Chivers (2) and Martin Peters (2).
Tbilisi were the ‘Double’ winners in Georgia and dropped down from the Champions League having lost to Steaua Bucharest losing 3 – 1 on aggregate in the 3rd Qualifying Round. They lost the 1st leg by two goals and drew 1 – 1 in the home match. In the previous round they had defeated a team from the Faroe Islands 9 – 2 on aggregate.
The home leg will be played three days before the first north London derby of the season with Spurs travelling to the Emirates on the following Sunday.
