Many of the young players who took part in last summer’s NI Milk Cup for Tottenham have taken the first step in their footballing careers as they look forward to joining the Academy as 1st Year scholars on leaving school in July.On Tuesday evening Tottenham published a list on the club website of players who would be leaving the club this summer. At the end of that article there was the good news of the names of the young players who will be making the step up to join the Academy at Spurs in July. Many of those players took part in last year’s NI Milk Cup competition which is held in Coleraine and surrounding area every July. Tottenham have participated in the competition for the past three years but will not be sending a team this summer.
We send our best wishes to all who will be leaving White Hart Lane and congratulate the players who will be joining the Academy. Those young players have been with Spurs for a number of years, training in the evenings, at weekends and during school holidays as well as playing regularly for the Under-16 team with some having had the opportunity to play with the older age group.
Over the past three summers I have had the pleasure of attending the Milk Cup tournament to watch and report on the Tottenham team. It has been a very enjoyable experience with the younger players being excellent representatives for the club. It has also been interesting to follow the development of the players from the previous two Milk Cup tournaments in the Academy as they play in the Under-18 team, the NextGen Series and the Under-21 team.
Spurs have tended to send younger players to the competition to gain experience so they have been pitted against older, taller and stronger players but the Tottenham players always acquitted themselves in a very favourable way displaying the confidence and skills to compete against their older opponents. Now last summer’s team are about to embark on the next stage of their footballing education.
First Year in the Academy
Of the group who were in Northern Ireland in July, 2012 some have already had a year with the Tottenham Academy. Next year’s 1st Year scholars include the following players who were at the Milk Cup 2012 – Harry Voss (G/k), Channing Campbell-Young (FB/CD), Anthony Georgou (LM), Luke Amos (CM) who played for England Under-16 team, Cy Goddard (CM), Joe Pritchard (M) Anton Walkes (M) and Shayon Harrison (F). The three other 1st Year Scholars are Joshua Onomah (CM) who played for the England Under-16 team and also had the chance to play in the NextGen Series last season, Lloyd Ross and Kyle Walker-Peters.
Congratulations and best wishes go to all of the players who will be joining the Academy. We wish them well in the future and hope that they enjoy the experience and that one day we might see some of them running onto the White Hart Lane pitch for a Premier League match.
